Book Forum Raises Bar for Nigerian Publishers

The Laipo Book Reading Forum is waxing stronger, thanks to Ayo Olofintuade, the runner-up for the 2011 NLNG Prize for Children's Literature and NSIAC, American Corner and The Booksellers Limited, Ibadan. The second Edition held on the 12th of November,2011.

The art event was like a meal filled with rich condiments, ready to be served. There were poetry readings from Tosin Kolawole,Funmi Aluko,Tunde Dike and Femi 'fairchild Morgan.

Present at the event at the magazine road,Dugbe,Ibadan, were lovers of literary discourse, creativity, reading and entertainment, from Ibadan. Student from secondary schools were also at the event.

The LAIPO Book event is poised to improve leisure reading in the society. It's first edition had Odili Ujubonu, author of Pride of a Spider Clan, Remi Raji, quintessential poet, Sylvia Nzegbo,amongst others.

There was also alternative music by Babatunde Ogunseinde, Babatunde is a fast rising alternative music artist whose music performance have been widely regarded amongst art and literary circles in Ibadan and in international fora.Babatunde's music is a mix of cosmopolitan jazz and afrocentric folklore. He is an artist who enjoys live performances because of his confidence in carrying the audience along.

The reading event also had a lengthy Educational, entertaining and analytical discussion on the novella of Hyginus Ekwazi, titled Miles Before I Go to Sleep, a witty story about managing three mischievous sons in a 21st century home.

The book discussion was anchored by Tolu Fagbure, a theatre artist who also holds literary talks at events. Fagbure espoused that the book talks about the challenge of children growing up in a hi-tech millennium. For him, children are exposed to a higher level of freedom compared when compared to older generations. He noted that Ekwazi also emphasized the importance of motherhood in the home. For him, mothers may be fragile but they play a pivotal role in keeping the fabric of the family alive.

Grandma Marie, an art lover complained about the poor packaging and typographical errors in the book. She however admits that the novella was an interesting one. A lot of readers agreed to Grandma Marie's position and suggested that Nigerian publishers pay attention to editing and packaging.

Laolu Ogunniyi praised the organisers of the event for making giant strides towards bringing the book culture back to the fore of national development. He saluted the creativity of all the performers, poets and discussants and promised to be involved at the regular monthly event. Ogunniyi was the director for the enigmatic old Nigerian movie," Abija". He is the artistic director at LOTO productions, Ibadan.

Tunde Musoru, CEO of Booksellers Limited admonished that the comments made about Ekwazi's novella should be transmitted to him, so that he can produce a better work. He thanked everyone for coming.

Femi 'fairchild read some of his poems at the event. For the poems titled "The phone Lines are Open" and "The Phone Lines are Open II", he was lauded by Laolu Ogunniyi, Tunde Musoru, amongst others.
